چکیده

The recognition of nonrigid motion, particularly that arising from human movement (and by extension from the locomotory activity of animals) has typically made use of high-level parametric models representing the various body parts (legs, arms, trunk, head etc.) and their connections to each other. Such model-based recognition has been successful in some cases; however, the methods are often diicult to apply to real-world scenes, and are severely limited in their generalizability. The rst problem arises from the diiculty of acquiring and tracking the requisite model parts, usually speciic joints such as knees, elbows or ankles. This generally requires some prior high-level understanding and segmentation of the scene, or initialization by a human operator. The second problem, with generalization, is due to the fact that the human model is not much good for dogs or birds, and for each new type of motion, a new model must be hand-crafted. In this paper, we show that the recognition of human or animal locomotion, and, in fact, any repetitive activity can be done using low-level, non-parametric representations. Such an approach has the advantage that the same underlying representation is used for all examples, and no individual tailoring of models or prior scene understanding is required. We show in particular, that repetitive motion is such a strong cue, that the moving actor can be segmented, normalized spatially and temporally, and recognized by matching against a spatio-temporal template of motion features. We have implemented a real-time system that can recognize and classify repetitive motion activities in normal gray-scale image sequences. Results on a number of real-world sequences are described.

Physically-Based Combinations of Views: Representing Rigid and Nonrigid Motion

Nonrigid motion can be described as morphing or blending between extremal shapes, e.g., heart motion can be described as transitioning between the systole and diastole states. Using physically-based modeling techniques, shape similarity can be measured in terms of forces and strain. This provides a physically-based coordinate system inwhichmotion is characterized in terms of physical similarity...

The contribution of nonrigid motion and shape information to object perception in pigeons and humans.

The ability to perceive and recognize objects is essential to many animals, including humans. Until recently, models of object recognition have primarily focused on static cues, such as shape, but more recent research is beginning to show that motion plays an important role in object perception. Most studies have focused on rigid motion, a type of motion most often associated with inanimate obj...

Structure and motion of nonrigid object under perspective projection

The paper focuses on the problem of structure and motion of nonrigid object from image sequence under perspective projection. Many previous methods on this problem utilize the extension technique of SVD factorization based on rank constraint to the tracking matrix, where the 3D shape of nonrigid object is expressed as a weighted combination of a set of shape bases. All these solutions are based...

Dense Nonrigid Motion Tracking from a Sequence of Velocity Fields - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 1996. Proceedings CVPR '96, 1996 IEEE Computer Society Co

We have addressed the problem of tracking the nonrigid motion of the heart using a sequence of velocity fields and a sequence of contours. The information from both the contours and the dense velocity fields is integrated into a deforming mesh that is placed over the myocardium at one time frame and then tracked over the entire cardiac cycle. The deformation is guided by a smoothing filter that...

Structure and Nonrigid Motion Analysis from 2d Images

Structure and nonrigid motion analysis is a very important problem in computer vision. Most of the work in nonrigid motion analysis thus far has aimed at correspondence estimation from the complete structure of the scene (stereo or range), \optic ow" analysis of image sequences, or 2D image registrations. Limited study has been conducted to track both structure and nonrigid motion at the same t...
